Treatments

Chiropractic is a safe, natural way to tackle the root causes of common complaints like lower back pain, neck stiffness and shoulder pain.

We’ll work with you to assess and identify the cause of an issue, and, where appropriate, use chiropractic techniques (sometimes called adjustments) to relieve it. In turn, we’ll help to improve how you move.

We’ll also look beyond hands-on therapy, which means we might advise on lifestyle changes, recommend useful rehab exercises to do at home, or even make a referral to another clinician.

Musculoskeletal conditions we can help manage and treat

Ease those headache symptoms

From migraines and stress headaches to more serious pathologies, headaches come in many guises. The most common are referred pain headaches, caused by tightness in the muscles and structures that hold up your head. Let Gary assess and, where possible, correct the structures causing the problem.

Assistance for pregnancy-associated pain

Many women experience lower back or pelvic girdle pain during their pregnancy, owing to the extra stresses and strains associated with carrying a baby, or to hormonal changes that relax your joints. Chiropractic can help with certain conditions – please chat to us to find out more.

Get help with sciatica

Sciatica can be caused by everything from spinal disc issues to arthritis impinging on neurological structures, along with muscular problems. We’ll carefully assess the likely cause of your sciatica, and, where appropriate, offer treatment.

Tackle shoulder pain or reduced movement

A marvel of engineering, the shoulder joint owes much of its stability to the muscles and ligaments surrounding it. We often get pain or reduced movement in this joint due to structural changes through ageing or repeated injury. Chiropractic can help to mobilise your shoulder and tackle the underlying imbalances.

Improve neck pain

Whether it’s poor posture or strain caused by an accident, we’ll assess the cause of your pain, and if appropriate, use spinal manipulation and soft tissue techniques to help ease the discomfort.

Ease back pain

Studies show that lower back pain will affect up to 60% of people in their lifetimes – almost two-thirds of us! Common causes include strain, muscle imbalance or even having a leg length difference. We’ll help you address the route cause, develop an effective treatment plan, and bring you some relief.

Improve your posture

Whether it’s caused by long hours at a desk, or a repetitive, physical job, posture-related pain is a modern ailment with a natural solution. Gary will help you identify what’s straining you, and come up with a strategy to help you better manage the problem as you work.

Tackle general aches, pains and dysfunction

Chiropractic isn’t just restricted to treating spinal complaints – it’s well placed to tackle musculoskeletal issues from your head to your toes. That’s because the principles behind the cause of pain in your back are similar in other parts of your body. Our commonly treated complaints include numbness and tingling in the arms hands and fingers, often caused by tightness in nearby structures.

Treatment – what to expect

How we work with you

Whenever you visit Glossop Chiropractic Clinic, we want you to feel completely at ease. Here’s what to expect when you’re with us.

Before your treatment

We’ll start by going over your full clinical history. Our chiropractor Gary will ask some questions about your pain or discomfort, and check in on previous treatments. He’ll also make sure your medical information is correct. From there, Gary will perform an in-depth assessment. This includes sensory and muscle strength testing, looking closely at the joints and muscles you’re struggling
with, and orthopaedic and reflex testing. Together, these tests will help Gary come to
a diagnosis.

We’ll discuss your diagnosis and recommend a treatment or referral. Sometimes, there may be a treatment at the end of the session. But for more complex cases, it’s unlikely. This is because there might not be enough time, it would be clinically inappropriate, or because further testing – like an MRI, X-Ray or blood test – is needed. If this happens, Gary will refer you to your GP or a specialist.

During your treatment

A standard treatment at Glossop Chiropractic Clinic takes about 20 minutes, and usually involves soft tissue work, spinal manipulation therapy, Distraction (a spinal stretching technique), rehabilitation exercises, and reassessment (when appropriate).

Soft tissue work

Can be a little painful at the time and cause short-lasting painful effects for some time afterwards. Symptoms will usually ease after 24/48 hours.

Spinal manipulation therapy

For the vast majority of the time, this technique is pain-free, but it can cause a cracking/crunching noise depending on the area of the body being treated.

Distraction

Most commonly used for patients with suspected disc irritation, Distraction stretches the spine and its associated tissues. Very rarely is this technique painful.

After your treatment

It’s completely normal for pain or discomfort to feel slightly worse after treatment. This is because of the work done to the joints, muscles, and their surrounding structures. You should find that things ease up after 24-48 hours. But if you have any
concerns, please get in touch.

What was that cracking sound?

The cracking noise that people often associate with chiropractic is completely natural and nothing to worry about. It’s caused by small pockets of air or bubbles in the fluid surrounding your joints; during a chiropractic adjustment, when joints and tissues are stretched, air is released from the fluid with a pop.

Is chiropractic actually safe?

Chiropractic is safe when it’s performed properly by a trained and registered chiropractor. Mild side effects from your treatment might include aches and pains, stiffness and tiredness, but these usually ease quickly. There’s a risk of more serious
problems, such as a slipped disc or stroke, from spinal manipulation – if you have any concerns, please chat to us.

Governance and keeping you safe

Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession well suited to the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractors like Gary have been regulated by the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) since 1994.

The GCC exists to protect the public by establishing and operating a scheme of statutory regulation for chiropractors. Its role is to set the standards of chiropractic education, conduct and practice; ensure the development of the profession of chiropractic; advance a model of continuous improvement in practice; and to promote the contribution that chiropractic makes to the health of the nation.
